“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name. John 1:12
That small little word “But”. How lives are changed thru the acceptance or rejection of that one little word. Why is it there? It signifies a contrast between two things. In the case of John 1:12 it contrast belief and unbelief. These biblical “buts” are hinges on which great doctrine and the destiny of men swing. In v. 11 John says that Jesus came to His own and they did not receive Him. But as many as received Him… Do you see the contrast? Some today recognize Jesus, they claim to know Jesus, even talk about Jesus, however they have not received Jesus. So it was in biblical times. Most Jews rejected Jesus as their Messiah. Yet there was a small remnant who received Him. This small group entered through the narrow gate, they walked the straight path, they received God’s grace by their faith, they were entering the kingdom of God and eternal life. All by receiving Jesus. What does it mean to receive Him? Receiving Jesus means that when He offers Himself to you, you welcome Him in for what He is.
if He comes as Savior, you welcome His salvation
if He comes as Leader, you welcome His leadership
if He comes as Provider, you welcome His provision
if He comes as Counselor, you welcome His counsel
if He comes as Protector, you welcome His protection
if He comes as Authority, you welcome His authority
if He comes as King, you welcome His rule.
Receiving Jesus does not mean some kind of peaceful co-existence with Christ Who makes no claims on your life as though He can only stay in your heart as long as He doesn’t play His music too loud.
Once you receive Him suddenly you have the right, power, authority to become a child of God. This right, power, authority is not within yourself. It is from God. You can not find it inside you. It only comes from above. It’s power lies in the authority of the Son. And only in a proper relationship with Him can you utilize the right, power, authority. It is God’s to give and it is yours to use.
What does this right, power, authority do? It is the power to overcome the world, the flesh, the devil. It is the power to crucify every sin which ensnares you. It is the power to conquer lust, the bottle, the needle, the temptations of life. It is the power to LIVE! To live as God designed you. The power to enjoy His creation and this earthly life you’ve been granted. It is the power to know God and walk with Him. It is the power of hope!
Many a man attempts to become Christian and fail.
They might as well try to jump from here to heaven.
With man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible. You must receive Jesus. Won’t you today?
