For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders: and His name will be called Wonderful … Isaiah 9:6
To us! This child is born. To us? What does Isaiah mean by this? For us, perhaps? Certainly, this child is a gift to all of us. Even to those who will reject Him, even to those who refuse to believe in Him. Yet to us who do believe; to us who do receive Him; God has described Him with four titles. The first being Wonderful… Wonderful – in our language means extraordinarily great or good, marvelous, excellent, impressive.
When was the last time the name of Jesus caused you to marvel, become excited, or even be amazed? When was the last time you stood in awe at the name of Jesus? Or perhaps you’ve become apathetic, oblivious, or just down rite ho-hum toward His name! If the latter describes you then you have lost the wonder of the Name. You’ve developed calluses on your heart and soul.
My brothers – Jesus is Wonderful! Amen? He is wonderful in His birth! Wonderful in His life! Wonderful in His teaching! Wonderful in His miracles! Wonderful in His death! Wonderful in His resurrection! And by the way, Wonderful in His second coming!
In the Old Testament names were a description on one’s character or attributes, the essence of one’s being. And so in Isaiah we are given insight into the multi-faceted name of the coming Messiah. The King of kings, the Lord of lords. The glorious Son of God who one day will reign upon this earth in person. What a wonder thought! What a wonderful day! What a wonderful name! What a beautiful way to begin describing our great God and King with the name Wonderful.
There is a new song out called “What a beautiful name”. Here are a few of it’s words;
“You did not want heaven without us, so Jesus you brought heaven down. My sin was great, Your love was greater, What could separate us now… Death could not hold You, the veil tore before You, You silenced the boast, of sin and grave. The heavens are roaring, the praise of Your glory, For You are raised to life again… You have no rival, You have no equal, Now and forever God you reign…”
O, my brothers and sisters, what a Wonderful name it is. The name of Jesus!!!
