Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: Cursed is the ground because of you… Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; Genesis 3:17-18a
I remember my folks having a garden when I was growing up. What I don’t remember was how much work went into growing that garden. It is always a labor of love when it comes to growing a garden. The mystery behind it for me is how fast the weed seed can sprout and take over your garden if not removed regularly. We didn’t plant those weeds yet they seem to be more productive then what we have planted.
As I was contemplating this, suddenly the Holy Spirit reminded me of sin. O not the sin of weeds, but the sin that is similar to these weeds. The sin that Jesus taught about in His parable of the “Sower and the Seed.”
As the seed was sown some of it fell into soil with weed seed in it. The weed seed (sin) grew up and choke out the good seed planted by the sower.
My first thought is to go in there and chop up all those weeds and get them out! But I realized in doing so I would chop up much of the plant I wanted to keep. Why all these weeds!!! Then I re-read the verse above – “Cursed is the ground because of you.” There’s the answer, the weeds are on account of me. My sin, my disobedience, my rebellion. I’m the reason for these weeds. The ground is cursed because of me.
All this leads me to another parable the - “Wheat and Tares” In this parable Jesus instructed to allow both wheat and tares (weeds) to grow up together and at the harvest they would be separated.
Now I know that these two parables have not much to do with gardening. However they have to do with the sin that we allow or the sin we do nothing with.
As quickly as these weeds grow in our garden, so does sin, if left unchecked. I guess what I’m trying to say is “get busy about dealing with the sin in your life. Don’t allow it to take root and choke out the good.” I know we don’t plan on it being there. I know that it just happens, but that is the enemy trying each and every way to distract you, to destroy you, to defeat you. Jesus has equipped us with the greatest weedin’ tool ever invented, the Holy Spirit. Listen to Him, walk with Him. When those weeds of sin pop up He will help you. He will give you victory. He is preparing you for home. A weed less home.
A beautiful home. As it says in Revelation 22:1,3
And he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb and there shall no longer be any curse… Hallelujah!!!
