Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man… Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man… Matthew 7:24a, 26a
“Act” or “does not act”, that is the question. The grandest teaching man has ever heard then concludes with those words, act or does not act. It would be more diplomatic to say - hears or does not hear, or believes or does not believe. But, that is not what our Lord said.
Act or does not act. So! It really comes down to the way I live in the kingdom. Not a front, or a want-a-be but a real life change to adhere to all that Jesus taught us in the Sermon on the Mount.
Now the problem with which we are faced is the ability to act upon those words. We might agree with them, and even like what they say but when it comes to acting upon them this is where we struggle, and even fail. In the Old Testament the prophet Zechariah wrote this –
“Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6b
There is the answer for us as well. By My Spirit…
God is fully capable of fulfilling His word in us by using His Spirit to accomplish in us what we could never do on our own. Without Him we would be totally at loss for living the Christian life. God never asks you and I to do anything apart from Him. His word of instruction to us is actually His goal for us. Not to be accomplished without Him but to be realized in and thru Him.
So! Living the Christian life is not by our will, or our want to, or even our gumption. It is done by our surrender. Our surrender to the Holy Spirit of God who lives in us, if you pass the test. What test? The one found is 2 Cor. “Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you – unless indeed you fail the test?” 2 Corinthians 13:5
When one finally realizes the Holy Spirit dwells in them because of the “born again” experience. Then and only then can they surrender to Him, in order to act upon the words of Jesus found in Matthew 5-7
Therefore become the wise man Jesus mentioned in verse 24 and surrender to His Holy Spirit and live out those words instead of simply agreeing with them.
In John 13:35 did Jesus say we would be known as His disciples by all men watching us understand love for one another? Or by all men watching us live out that love for one another?
act… or does not act… – which has it been for you?
