When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him. And a leper came to Him and bowed down before Him, and said, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Matthew 8:1-3a

Right after Jesus gave instructions of hearing and acting upon His words we see a man doing it. This man is one who is totally depraved, at least in the sight of men. This man came to Jesus. He was beyond human repair. Human hope. Human help. He understood that Jesus was his only saving chance for being healed. I believe it would have taken an army to keep this man away from Jesus. I believe he would stop at nothing to find and talk with the Lord. Perhaps he heard Jesus’ words on the mountain from a distance. What ever the case he found Jesus as the answer to his life.

I wonder today what keeps people from coming to Jesus? What prevents them? What gets in their way?

I see the majority having a pride problem. Wondering about His words and teachings but not really trusting His words. These people are too intent on how they will be seen or talked of; rather than throwing themselves before the Lord without care of the world’s opinion. I also see as a hindrance to them a blame game. They want to find someone in the church they feel is not doing Christianity justice. Someone they can blame for not being in a fellowship. Remember my brothers and sisters, beware as Jesus stated, there are wolves in sheep’s clothing. There are tares among the wheat, there are goats in the midst of lambs. There are and will be people using you as their scape goat. Using you as the reason they are not attending church.

When you experience this so called blame, keep your head up!!! There are also some encouraging words for you found in Jesus’ teaching from the Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 5:11 He says -

“Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

Do not use these words as a wedge to drive in-between you and them. Rather, use these words as a tool to tear open your own heart in love, compassion and prayer for them. Knowing what their outcome will be unless things change in their lives. Who knows perhaps that change will come through your witness, your life and your love.
