Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus… Hebrews 12:1,2,3a
As we look forward to observing Memorial Day tomorrow let us remember it’s purpose. It began in the late 1860’s due to the loss of soldiers in the Civil War. Over time it was to include all wars fought by American troops.
It was called Decoration Day only to give way to Memorial Day. It’s purpose was to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms here in America.
In the above verse; it seems to carry a similar overtone. To remember those going home before us and to follow their example as we live in the here and now. Not to be concerned with whether they can see us or not. But to realize the sacrifice they lived in following the Lord Jesus
In following their example, we will find that we too are being followed. Followed by those who are watching us. Your children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, co-workers, fellow church members, etc. This Memorial Day is a solemn day or at least it should be. As the world celebrates it as a day off from work, let us remember it’s true meaning. Lives given in service.
One day you and I will be a part of that “great cloud of witnesses.” What will the memories of you be? Will those still here desire to live as you were living? Will they remember you as a person of prayer? Will they hold your worn-out bible in their hands? Will they want to follow your example? Only time will tell. It’s never too late to start. Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
The key to being successful at this is also found in the above verse. “fixing our eyes on Jesus.”
What an example to remember; He will never lead you down a wrong road. A dead-end street. Or a hopeless path. He knows all the ways to life. He is the way to life. Without Him we can do nothing.
So! Why not begin your Memorial Day observance tomorrow by remembering the greatest memory maker of all. JESUS!!!
